The Downtown McKinney Trolley is a fun way to explore the area without asking little legs to walk the whole way. The free trolley runs Thursday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m., so you can park once and turn a trip downtown into an adventure of its own.
For families with young kids, the trolley can be especially handy. Parks to explore, treats to find, and plenty of little shops to peek into, but you don't have to walk from one end of Downtown McKinney to the other. Instead, ride for a bit, hop off and explore, then let the trolley give everyone's legs a break before the next stop.
Here's one way to use the trolley route to your advantage for a day with little ones.
🚒 Start at City Hall and Head to the Fire Museum
Start your adventure at City Hall, then catch the trolley heading west. Your first stop is the Fire Museum, located behind the Chestnut Garage.
Tucked behind the arcade and within walking distance of the Downtown McKinney square, the Fire Museum is a bit of a hidden gem. Inside, families can see antique fire trucks, learn more about McKinney's fire department, and check out pieces of local firefighting history.

The kids' area is what makes this stop especially fun for little ones. There are books to look through and a dress-up area where kids can pretend to be firefighters themselves. For a child who loves firetrucks, this could easily turn into the stop they talk about all day.

When you're finished exploring, head back to the trolley and stay on the westbound route.
🌳 Let Them Climb at Central Park
The next stop is Central Park, where kids can get some wiggles out at the small playground.
|
It's a nice place to pause for a little while rather than trying to pack every stop into the day. There's also a small pavilion nearby that makes an easy spot for a snack break.
And if your snacks didn't quite do the trick, you're in luck. There are a couple of places that are also on Kentucky Street worth knowing about.
🍦 Make a Treat Stop at Miruku
Miruku is family-owned and serves ice cream inspired by Asian flavors, making it a fun option when the usual ice cream stop just won't do. It's a chance for kids to try something a little different, while parents can enjoy a treat, too.

☕ Take a Coffee Break at Habitat Coffee Shop
Across the street, Habitat Coffee Shop is a pretty place to slow down for a coffee or another treat. The space is filled with plants, giving it an almost indoor-jungle feel.
For kids, waiting for a snack can become part of the fun. There are plenty of plants and little corners to look at, making it easy to imagine you're on a safari instead of sitting in a coffee shop.

Once everyone's ready to move on, return to the trolley at the corner of Virginia Street and continue west.
⛲ Stop for Some Fresh Air at Dr. Glenn Mitchell Park
Ride west to Dr. Glenn Mitchell Memorial Park for another chance to get outside.
The park has a large fountain surrounded by benches, along with a few fun statues for kids to discover. It's not a traditional playground, but that's not really the point. After a trolley ride and a couple of stops, it's a good place to let kids run, wander, and enjoy some open space.

And after that run-around time, there's a good chance someone will be ready for more than the snacks from earlier.
🍔 Stop for A Meal at The Yard
The Yard is the next stop, and the timing works out nicely after some time running around at Dr. Glenn Mitchell. It's an outdoor restaurant with plenty of kid-friendly meal options, making it a good place to stop for a real meal before continuing the adventure.
It's also a particularly handy trolley stop because parking in that area can be limited. Instead of circling, looking for a spot, ride in and settle in for lunch while the kids refuel.

After you're finished, catch the trolley heading east toward Downtown McKinney.
📚 Find a New Favorite at Neighbor Books
Once you're back in the downtown area, get off at Neighbor Books, a local bookstore with a special spot for young readers.
The kids' section has its own kid-sized furniture and tables, giving little ones a place to settle in and try out a new book before deciding if it needs to come home. They can read independently or snuggle in and look through books with a parent.

And while the kids browse, parents can explore the rest of the store. There are plenty of books for grown-ups, too, because sometimes a downtown outing should include something for Mom and Dad!
Pro Tip: Neighbor Books hosts story times from 10:15 to 10:30 a.m. on Thursdays and Saturday mornings. Check the bookstore's current schedule if you'd like to build story time into your trolley adventure.
🍿 Take a Sweet Detour at Mom & Popcorn
For a treat that feels like part of the adventure, stop into Mom and Popcorn. This downtown McKinney shop has more than 50 flavors of fresh popcorn, plus nostalgic candy, old-fashioned glass-bottled drinks and homemade fudge.

Kids can browse the colorful selection and pick out something new to try, while parents may recognize a few candies from their own childhood. It's an easy stop to squeeze into a trolley adventure, especially if everyone needs a little something sweet along the way.
🌎 Turn Shopping Into a Game at Fair & Square
When you're ready for the next stop, simply walk across the street to Fair & Square.
The shop has a unique collection of toys, gifts, and knick-knacks, but there's another reason kids may want to explore every corner: the Fair & Square Kid's Quest.
|
Head to the register, and kids are assigned a country. Then, it's time to search the store for something from that country. Find it, and they earn a sticker. Collect six stickers, and they get a prize!
It's a fun way to turn a little shopping stop into something kids can participate in, too.
🚋 End the Day With a Trolley Ride
After Fair & Square, walk back to the trolley and ride east toward your car. By the end of the outing, you've visited a museum, played at a park, found some treats, spent time outside, grabbed lunch, browsed a bookstore, and explored a local shop, all without having to make little legs walk the entire length of downtown.
And there's something pretty fun about ending the day with a trolley ride, too. For kids, the ride itself can feel like part of the adventure. For parents, it's a much easier way to get around without worrying about parking timers or trying to decide whether everyone has enough energy left to make the walk back.
One thing to know before you go: The trolley itself can be difficult to navigate with a stroller, especially when boarding and finding a spot inside. If you're bringing a baby or young toddler, consider using a carrier instead, or plan for your little one to walk when you're off the trolley.
